8 Signs You Need New Gutters
How to recognize when it is time for a new gutter system, and what the consequences are of waiting too long.
We don't patch gutters. In our experience, once a system has started failing (leaking joints, loose hangers, cracked end caps, sagging runs), patching is more expensive in the long run than installing new. A patch creates a weak spot that we cannot warranty, and once one section has let go, the rest of the system is usually right behind it. A new seamless system is cheaper in the end because you know the whole thing is sound and under warranty, instead of paying for the next fix a year from now.
Here are the eight signs we see most often when inspecting Boise-area homes that tell us it is time for a new system.
Visible Cracks, Holes, or Split Seams
Address PromptlySmall cracks in gutter bodies or open seams at joints are the clearest warning sign. Patching and resealing may hold for a season, but in our experience it is almost always cheaper in the long run to install a new seamless system than to chase the next leak. A patch is a weak spot we cannot warranty. New gutters mean the whole system is sound and covered.
Gutters Pulling Away from the Fascia
Address PromptlyGutters that are separating from the roofline indicate that either the fascia board behind them is rotting (very common in older Boise homes), the hanger system has failed, or both. Rehanging the same tired gutters is a short-term fix at best, and it is not something we can stand behind. A new seamless system installed on sound fascia is the only way to know the problem is really fixed.
Sagging Sections
Gutters should be straight with a slight, consistent pitch toward the downspout. Visible sagging indicates failed or spaced-too-far hangers, accumulated debris weight that has distorted the gutter body, or age-related metal fatigue.
Rust, Heavy Pitting, or Paint Peeling Inside the Gutter
Galvanized steel gutters rust from the inside out. Heavy pitting on aluminum indicates corrosion from shingle granule abrasion and long-term standing water. Interior rust staining is a late-stage warning sign.
Water Damage or Staining on Fascia and Soffits
Address PromptlyStaining, peeling paint, or rot on the fascia board beneath the gutter line indicates that water has been escaping behind or over the gutter for an extended period, either from overflow, improper pitch, or a failing back wall seal.
Basement or Foundation Moisture
Address PromptlyGutters overflow at the foundation when they're clogged or undersized. If your basement or crawlspace has had repeated water intrusion, and your gutters overflow during rain events, the system needs to be assessed.
Gutters That Are 20+ Years Old
If your aluminum gutters are approaching 20 years old, they're in the later stages of their useful life. Sectional gutters from that era typically used spike-and-ferrule installation that has failed progressively. The more patches you've paid for, the clearer the case for a new system. Installing new is almost always cheaper in the long run than continuing to fight the old one.
You're Doing Other Exterior Work
If you're replacing your roof, residing your home, or repainting the exterior, that's the ideal time to also replace gutters. Installing new gutters after new siding or roofing avoids overlap and ensures the whole system is properly integrated.
What's the Cost of Waiting?
Failing gutters cause water damage progressively. The later you act, the more expensive the fix becomes, because by the time you're replacing gutters, you're often also dealing with damaged fascia, soffits, and in some cases, the beginning of foundation issues.
A new gutter system in Boise runs $1,200–$2,500 for most homes. Fascia carpentry adds cost. Foundation waterproofing when water intrusion has reached that level? That's a $5,000–$15,000 project.
